hanlan boat Club coxswain program

Are you a strong communicator, a tactical thinker and good at motivating others? Then join Hanlan’s coxie program and learn what it takes to push a crew to victory while keeping an eagle eye on competitors and steering a straight course to the finish line. In this program, you’ll practice and race all season with our competitive rowers, improving your rowing knowledge and leadership skills under the guidance of Hanlan’s coaching staff, while having fun with your teammates on Lake Ontario. By the end of the program, you will have all the skills required to cox in a high school or university rowing program—or even be a coach one day!

All cox boxes, safety gear and rowing equipment will be provided by Hanlan Boat Club.

COACH: This program will be coached by Head Technical Coach Horacio Tendilla and Head Coach Kirsten Ryan, with support from our assistant coaching staff (bios) .

PRIOR EXPERIENCE: No coxing or rowing experience required. (We will teach you everything you need to know.) Moderate physical fitness, including the ability to lift 40 pounds, is expected, though accommodations are available.

AGE: 12+

TIMING: Choose from up to six early morning training sessions per week (Monday-Friday: 5:30 a.m. - 7:15 a.m; Saturday: 6:30 a.m. - 9 a.m.); afternoon and evening practice sessions are also available.

2025 DATES: Mid-April to October 31, 2025

PRICING: $65 (Rowing Canada insurance fee)

INCLUDES: Includes free, bi-monthly Hanlan barbecues on Thursday nights and occasional team social events.

SAFETY: Safety is our primary concern. If weather or water conditions are unsafe, practice will be conducted on land. Safety coach boats will accompany competitive rowers on the water at all times.

OTHER: Coxswains must commit to racing at most regattas and should plan to attend most practices. See 2025 regatta schedule here.
