Hanlan Coaching Centre of Excellence

TAKE YOUR COACHING TO THE NEXT LEVEL

The Hanlan Coaching Centre of Excellence, or HCCE, is a three-month program designed to help Hanlan’s coaching staff refine their coaching skills beyond the training provided by the RCA Coach Development Pathway. Launched in 2022 and led by RCA Performance Coach / Coach Educator Tony Tremain, Hanlan coaches receive real-time feedback during practices, as well participate in coaching-oriented seminars with guest speakers, one-on-one goal-setting sessions, and formal performance reviews.

Hanlan recognizes how difficult it is for coaches to develop their technical coaching skills and chart a successful coaching career on their own. To this end, the HCCE provides personalized, in-depth coaching support in a nurturing environment of like-minded fellow coaches and a friendly rowing community.

Note: The Hanlan Coaching Centre of Excellence is not an alternative to NCCP coach training. This experience is supplementary to Rowing Canada’s rowing coach pathway(s) and all HCCE participants are strongly encouraged to continue their coaching certification with Rowing Canada through the NCCP.

As part of the HCCE program, all Hanlan coaches receive:

  • Day-to-day support from a friendly coaching staff that works together to inspire all Hanlan rowers on their rowing journey

  • Real-time feedback on coaching technique during practices

  • Regular seminars about relevant rowing topics (e.g., rigging, training plans, rower nutrition, etc.) by head coach and guest coaches

  • Monthly informal performance reviews

  • Assistance in goal setting and professional development

  • Assistance in navigating the RCA certification process

By Season’S END, all Hanlan coaches will know how to:

  • Bring the joy of rowing into the coach boat and spread that joy liberally amongst the crews

  • Contribute positively to a rower’s development at every age and skill level

  • Use a set of coaching tools, vocabulary and drills to identify and correct the root causes of technical rowing flaws in a rower

  • Pinpoint a rower’s challenges (e.g., fitness, flexibility, attitude) and discuss the limitations with rowers in a positive, effective manner

  • Prepare rowers for success in intense situations, whether it be in competitions at the Club or at regattas throughout Ontario
